Amsterdam To Fly Gay Rainbow Flag During Russian President Vladimir Putin's Visit
Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly in for a surprise when he visits Amsterdam next month. As Pink News and Carbonated.tv are both reporting, the capital city of the Netherlands will fly the rainbow flag when Putin arrives on April 8 in protest of Russia’s proposed “gay propaganda” legislation.
“The [Amsterdam] College wishes to express its concern with the rainbow flag and the seven districts will ask to do the same,” a spokesperson for the city’s council is quoted by Carbonated as saying. ”Amsterdam is committed to an open and tolerant city where everyone can be who he is. The flag stands for diversity and gay acceptance.”
Putin’s visit, which marks a year of cultural exchange between Russia and the Netherlands, will include visits to the Maritime Museum and the Hermitage Museum, according to Pink News. The Dutch reports coincide with news that Putin is now calling for a ban on foreign gay couples adopting Russian children, according to Gay Star News. Russian legislation which took effect in January already bans U.S. citizens from adopting children from Russia.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights have been a hot issue in Russia as of late. Shocking footage of a local LGBT rights activist being beaten by an alleged neo-Nazi made the blogosphere rounds earlier this week. The activist, identified by Gay Star News as Artem Kalinin, was speaking out against the ban of a planned Pride parade, which had been scheduled for March 31 in Syktyvkar, at the time of the attack. So-called “homosexual propaganda” legislation, which has already beenenacted in St. Petersburg as well as a number of other Russian municipalities, is currently being pushed by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church to be enforced nationwide.
Such laws would would make it illegal nationwide to provide minors with information that is defined as “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgenderism,”according to the Associated Press, and bring a fine of up to $16,000.

T’is the Season To Give - Just Not to the Salvation Army
For those who don’t know the Salvation Army has refused to grant same-sex partner benefits to their employees in states where marriage is not legal, will actively discriminate against gays, lesbians, and trans people in need of their services, and has even refused money from cities because of domestic partnership laws (San Francisco 1998) and threatened to shut down soup kitchens rather than comply to the city’s legislation requiring firm to provide same-sex domestic partnership benefits to their employees (New York 2004).
According to the International Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) ”The Salvation Army does not only discriminate against gay and lesbian people, it also works politically against LGBT rights all over the world. In Sweden, e g, the Army has protested against the law that makes same-sex marriages legal, and against the inclusion of homosexuals in a law criminalizing incitement to hatred. Other examples of this type of behaviour in other countries were given in the programme.”

IOC Mum on How They Will Protect LGBTQ Athletes in Sochi
With the London 2012 Olympics and Para-Olympic games coming to an end Olympic focus is shifting to the next games, the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
Outside of the general questionable human rights issues within Russia (most recently surrounding the arrest and sentencing of the punk group Pussy Riot) the country has been increasingly hostile towards LGBTQ people.
Moscow recently put a 100 year ban in place on Pride Parades, St. Petersburg and several other municipalities have put laws in place banning the “promotion of homosexuality” with this set to be introduced for politicians to put this in place nationally. The Pride House (introduced in 2010 at the Vancouver Olympics and present at the London games as well) has been banned from taking part in the Sochi games by the organizers there.
The IOC has yet to address what they are going to do to ensure the safety of openly LGBTQ athletes at the games, especially if a national law against “promoting homosexuality” is put in place. How will the IOC address openly gay athletes, coaches, team member, or even members of the press/media from broadcasting or tweeting about being LGBTQ. Will an athlete/coach/member’s tweet thanking their same-sex partner for their support be seen as promoting homosexuality? Will the broadcasters be banned from having an athlete and their same-sex partners on air?
One thing that is certain is despite the introduction of the United Nations recognizing LGBTQ rights as human rights the IOC does not seem to share this opinion. It will be interesting to see whether or not how LGBTQ athletes will be welcomed will be something the IOC considers when considering future bids for the games, clearly it was not something consider with the selection of Sochi.

The United Church (Canada) Elects 1st Openly Gay Moderator
“The United Church of Canada, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, has elected openly gay Rev. Gary Paterson as moderator, making him what is believed to be the first openly gay person to lead a major Christian denomination.”
This is amazing news. The United Church of Canada has always been a very progressive denomination and has long stood onside of LGBTQ rights (supporting same-sex marriage well before is was legalized in Canada).
