Russian lawmakers pass anti-gay bill in 436-0 vote

What does this law do? Well if I were in Russia it would be illegal for me to have my blog, I wouldn’t have been able to be a part of Queer McGill during university, my soccer or water polo organization wouldn’t be allowed to exist, pride parades are banned, making public statements supporting the rights of LGBTQ people is illegal, even movies, TV shows, music, or art seen as ‘promoting’ homosexuality are effectively banned from Russia. I hope the international community denounces this for the draconian and extremely oppressive act that it is. I also hope that any LGBTQ athletes or allies going to Socchi next year make a stand and proudly sport the rainbow flag during their events or upon receiving medals in protest of this disgusting stance.

Find out more about the bill here.

Meg Whitman, CEO at Hewlett-Packard, Posts Her Support of Same-sex Marriage on LinkedIn & Faces Backlash

A few days ago Meg Whitman, CEO at Hewlett-Packard, voiced her support of marriage equality, or same-sex marriage, on LinkedIn. The comments since then have been streaming in heavily. As of the time of this posting there have been over 500 comments that range from offensive, to supportive, to debating the choice of medium she used.

The negative comments (and there have been many) have typically used the same old religious arguments we have heard before, and can be debunked here. There have also been claims that homosexuality is a disease, a learned behaviour, can be cured, and goes against nature. Other arguments have been focused around procreation (also debunked in the linked article listed above) and the fact that it goes against nature (which can simply be debunked by looking at the prevalence of homosexuality within nature or the evolutionary explanation behind homosexuality).

You can join the conversation by going to the LinkedIn page here.

This student from the University of Technology in Kingston Jamaica was attacked by a mob of fellow students all because he is gay. When he sought out help from campus security he instead found more violence from those paid to keep people safe… All because he is gay.

One day there will be a Gay, Bi, Lesbian, or even Trans President of the United States of America. When that day comes people will look at those who stood against same-sex marriage the same way we view those who tried to deny African-American students from attending school with White students.

I look forward to the people who went to support Chick-fil-A explaining their ignorance and actions driven by hate/fear to the next generation who will see their actions as deplorable.

I think the gay rights movement in the U.S. should organize a take a shit in a Chick-fil-A day.

So who is with me? :)
