As the U.S. government implements the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, legally wed same-sex couples will be able to file their federal taxes as such.
The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill has passed the final reading in the House of Lords, and after some clearing up in the House of Commons, will go to Queen Elizabeth II to be signed into law
Congrats England and Wales!!!
WASHINGTON — The Defense of Marriage Act, the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday by a 5-4 vote. DOMA, signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996, prevents same-sex couples whose marriages are recognized by their home state from receiving the hundreds of benefits available to other married couples under federal law.

If you want to tout the “traditional” definition of marriage according to the Bible then you should probably understand what those definitions are: According to Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5 marriage shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. In II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21 Marriage shall not impede a man’s right to take concubines, in addition to his wife or wives. According to Deut 22:13-21 A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30 Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. If you consider Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9 then divorce is not allowed. Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10 If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother’s widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine. Deut 22:28-29 A virgin who is raped must marry her rapist and the rapist must pay victim’s father 50 shekels of silver to make up for his loss.
The Bible also makes mention of a number of godly men who practiced polygamy (had multiple wives), Solomon had 300.
While taking the biblical definition of marriage so seriously people should also ensure that they follow other parts of the bible like the laws set forth in Leviticus. Lev 11 prohibits the consumption and touching of pork products, it also prohibits consuming shellfish. Lev 19-24 If a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be set apart seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. Lev 19:19 bans growing different crops in the same field (no vegetable gardens). 19:19 also bans wearing clothing made of different fabric (no cotton linen blends). Lev 19:27 Don’t cut your hair nor shave. Lev 24:14-16 Anyone who curses or blasphemes God, should be stoned to death by the community.
One of my favorite biblical quotes though is Matthew 7:1 Judge not lest ye be judged.
Ultimately people need to understand that the United States is not a religious dictatorship. Is a wonderful country that is made up of a number of different cultures and faiths where those people are allowed to practice their faiths - one of the corner stones of the country. Some of those cultures have traditional views of marriage that are only between a man and a woman, and some don’t (First Nations People’s for instance). Some religious institutions do not support same-sex marriage and some do (Unitarian, Wicca/Pagan, Liberal and Reform Judaism). No religious institution should be forced to perform marriage that they don’t want to (as is the case in all jurisdictions where is has been made legal within the USA) - this would infringe on the right to religious freedom. That right must also extend to those in faiths that do believe being able to perform same-sex marriages though. To not do so would infringe on those people’s religious freedom.
Ideally I believe the state (government) should only grant civil unions to all couple (opposite and same-sex) and leave marriages up to the religious organizations. This way all people would be legal and the religions that want to perform same-sex marriages would be able to and the ones that don’t won’t (just as they do not perform marriages they don’t want to today - people who have been divorced, or different faiths, etc).
Finally I would like to add that I find it discouraging when people attempt to use/warp or twist the Bible as a weapon to reinforce prejudice, inequality, discrimination, and hatred. I do not believe that is in line with the teachings of the book (certainly not with the New Testament and the teachings of Jesus Christ).
