North Carolina’s Ban on Same-sex Marriage: What Does It Mean for Business?

North Carolina’s new ban (they already had a measure in place stating marriage is between a man and a woman) could end up putting businesses in a tricky situation.

The new law, which passed 61% to 39%, states that marriage between a man and a woman is the only valid domestic legal union. So how does this affect businesses? Well any business in North Carolina that is currently covering people who are in same-sex marriages/civil unions/domestic partnerships OR in opposite-sex civil unions/domestic partnerships might have to stop recognizing those relationships according the new law. Unfortunately some of those organizations have pretty strict equality measures in place.

TD Bank for instance, a branch of the Toronto-Dominion Bank recognizes civil unions, civil/domestic partnerships, and same-sex marriages. How would they be supposed to operate within North Carolina when the law states that they cannot recognize those? Will they and other organizations like it be fined? Furthermore how are companies expected to attract talent from other areas of globe, where many heterosexual couples have shifted towards domestic partnerships rather than marriages (Quebec, many European countries) and their relationships will be made invalid within the state.

It seems like the law makers and more importantly, the voters, weren’t really thinking of what’s good for North Carolina. They were just thinking how they can screw over a group of people who want nothing more than to have the same rights and privileges that everyone else is entitled to. It turns out they may very well have ended up screwing over their state in the process.

New Hampshire Lawmakers to Vote to Repeal Same-sex Marriage

Aside from the obvious on why this is completely insulting to the LGBTQ community as well as to the majority of the people in New Hampshire (who are not in favour of this repeal) this is extremely troubling. When the state Senate and House can vote to remove the rights of one minority then they can remove the rights of any minority. What’s to stop them from rescinding interracial marriage? What’s to stop them from allowing Jews to get married?

I’m reminded of the poem below by Martin Niemoller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Ben and Jerry's backs gay marriage

fuckyeahgenderstudies:

B&J have renamed their Oh! My! Apple Pie! ice cream to Apple-y Ever After in support of the UK lobby for gay marriage.

Ben & Jerry’s has also joined forces with gay rights charity Stonewall to launch an application on Facebook, inviting fans to show their support for the proposed legislation and help convince parliament that it’s time to say ‘I do’ to same sex marriage. Laura Doughty, Stonewall’s Deputy CEO says “We’re truly moved by Ben and Jerry’s support for same-sex marriage in Britain. All people want is to call their long-term relationship by the same name as everyone else. Our strong advice to those who disapprove of same-sex marriage is just not to get married to someone of the same sex.”

Find out more about Ben & Jerry’s campaign at benjerry.co.uk and support the campaign on Twitter by using the #appleyeverafter hashtag.

(I may not like marriage at all, but i like ice cream a lot. Want this flav in my mouth so bad.)

Maryland Passes Same-sex Marriage (8th State to do so)

Holy Jebus! Yes that’s right Maryland, a State south of the Mason-Dixon, has legalized same-sex marriage. While it faces a questionable future with advocates against same-sex marriage pushing for a referendom it suprisingly has beat other states many thought would see equal marriage before it (Oregon, Hawaii, New Jersey, Rhodes Island).

A huge congratulations to all those in Maryland and hats off to the legislators in the State who had the courage to support equality and do what is right.

Slainte!
