Good-bye Ontario Place, Hello Possible Site for Olympic Stadium/Althete’s Village?

It’s the end of an Era for Ontario Place. After more than 30 years of operation the province’s tourist attracted will be closed until at least 2017. Queen Park cited the over $16 billion Ontario deficit and and savings of over $20 million with closing the money losing attraction as reason for the shut down.

Popular venues like the Atlantis Pavillion (site for many a weddings, formals/proms, and other functions) and the Molson Amphitheatre will remain open however.

So what will be done with the 51 hectare space? Numerous things have been proposed: condos, floating hotel, a casino. Though officials say a casino is not likely to be built there, though one at Exhibition Place is another story.

While there are those, like Ontario tourism minister Michael Chan, who want to see the site open for the 2015 Pan-Am Games and fully operational for Canada’s 150th Bday in 2017 I for one suggest another option. Through Toronto’s name into the hat for the 2024 Olympic Games. Ontario Place would be a great spot for the athlete’s village and possibly even an Olympic Stadium. Transform the area into a centre for sport, people can go there to train in swimming, rowing, canoeing, sailing, track, and other competitive diciplines that could have facilities in or attached to the space.

My other suggestion would be to turn it into a large park. Forget the attractions open the space up for people to walk around, open a pond for additional skating space that can be use in the winter, create running and biking paths on it for people to enjoy during the warmer months (and for the braver to enjoy year round). The land Ontario Place sits on is too valuable to simply turn over to condo or commercial development, it should very much remain a public space.

While may Olympic thought is a personal dream of mine (I would love nothing more than to see the most multi-cultural city in the world, a city I believe embodies what the Olympic’s represents in this world, host the summer games) I know it is not something many other people share (especially during a time of fiscal restraint). I do have faith in John Tory, that he will not privatize the space and will be able to create something special, be that a simple public park space, or as he hinted at something along the lines of Chicago’s Millennium Park. I am excited to see what happens.
