Gingrich: “Moon Contains Lots of Water” #Thingsthatarenottrue

Well we have certainly seen a lot of idiotic things during the race to win the Republican nomination for the 2012 election ticket, Rick Perry’s strong video, Herman Cain and his wandering eye, Santorum in general, but this moon base idea really takes the cake.

Newt Gingrich would like to see a moon base in place by the end of his second term (if elected, and then re-elected). While I am not totally against the idea of a moon base, because I love sci-fi like nothing else, I also understand that the cost of such an undertaking would probably rival the Iraq war and is entirely unnecessary when the economy is in the shape that it is.

What really irks me though is that a) Newt Gingrich seems to believe that the moon belongs to the United States (not really sure when the moon became the territory of the USA, I was under the impression it belongs to the world) b) one of Newt’s reasons for going to the moon is supposedly that contains lots of water and that we could use the moon as a refueling station to go to Mars or other reaches of the solar system.

Okay back up just a minute here. Water? Moon? When did this happen? Aside from some crystalized forms of water that have come to the Moon via meteorites that have crashed into it where is this vast quantity of water that Newt seems to think exists on it? Does Newt have water on the brain? What bafoon has been feeding him this misinformation? Secondly does Newt have no concept of distance? Why would people need to refuel at the Moon on a trip to Mars? The most usefull thing the Moon can offer on a trip to Mars is the ability to sling shot around it. The Moon’s proximity to Earth (on a trip to Mars the Moon would maybe be a day away) would make it ridiculous to land on the moon to refuel the water that has been consumed in a 24-48 hour time period. This is the man who wants to be President?

I actually feel sorry for Republican’s at this point. Looking at the candidates that they have to chose from is simply laughable and the primary race has only just begun, buckle up everyone and get ready for more lunacy.
