North Carolina’s new ban (they already had a measure in place stating marriage is between a man and a woman) could end up putting businesses in a tricky situation.
The new law, which passed 61% to 39%, states that marriage between a man and a woman is the only valid domestic legal union. So how does this affect businesses? Well any business in North Carolina that is currently covering people who are in same-sex marriages/civil unions/domestic partnerships OR in opposite-sex civil unions/domestic partnerships might have to stop recognizing those relationships according the new law. Unfortunately some of those organizations have pretty strict equality measures in place.
TD Bank for instance, a branch of the Toronto-Dominion Bank recognizes civil unions, civil/domestic partnerships, and same-sex marriages. How would they be supposed to operate within North Carolina when the law states that they cannot recognize those? Will they and other organizations like it be fined? Furthermore how are companies expected to attract talent from other areas of globe, where many heterosexual couples have shifted towards domestic partnerships rather than marriages (Quebec, many European countries) and their relationships will be made invalid within the state.
It seems like the law makers and more importantly, the voters, weren’t really thinking of what’s good for North Carolina. They were just thinking how they can screw over a group of people who want nothing more than to have the same rights and privileges that everyone else is entitled to. It turns out they may very well have ended up screwing over their state in the process.
Congrats to Josh. If he does make the cut, which looks very likely, he will be the first out gay gymnast the U.S. has sent to the games.
I can’t explain how much I love this. This is what more campaign ads should be like, intelligent, truthful, concise, and addressing the issues. Brilliant.
LOL Seriously?
NASA video: 131 years of Global Warming in 26 seconds. If you’ve been thinking this winter has been unseasonably warm, well guess what? You’re right.
Here in Toronto we had the warmest winter on records since tracking began in 1937. We also had the least amount of snowfall and the highest temperature (22.8C) for March 19th ever. Chicago destroyed it’s records 5 days in a row. Places in South Dakota hit 34C the earliest 30 plus reading ever recorded in the Northern Plains.
Trees have started blooming in New York and are fully budding here in Toronto, with 9 days left to go in March and more warm weather in the forecast.
But let’s get real. Climate change is just a myth that the Liberal lefty pinkos have made up, right?
Aside from the obvious on why this is completely insulting to the LGBTQ community as well as to the majority of the people in New Hampshire (who are not in favour of this repeal) this is extremely troubling. When the state Senate and House can vote to remove the rights of one minority then they can remove the rights of any minority. What’s to stop them from rescinding interracial marriage? What’s to stop them from allowing Jews to get married?
I’m reminded of the poem below by Martin Niemoller:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.
Standing in stark contract to the same-sex marriage proposal video in the last post is this video where instead of cheers of acceptance two men, after kissing, are ejected from a Santorum while audience members chant USA while they are kick out. The kiss occurs around the 3:44 mark in the video.
Santorum then says ”who (refering to himself) will stand for the values that made this country the greatest country in the world” to cheers from the audience. He then makes the statement that their ancestors didn’t come to the country for benefits, that they came here for freedom. I wonder if he realizes that same-sex couples are simply looking for the freedom to marry.
Holy Jebus! Yes that’s right Maryland, a State south of the Mason-Dixon, has legalized same-sex marriage. While it faces a questionable future with advocates against same-sex marriage pushing for a referendom it suprisingly has beat other states many thought would see equal marriage before it (Oregon, Hawaii, New Jersey, Rhodes Island).
A huge congratulations to all those in Maryland and hats off to the legislators in the State who had the courage to support equality and do what is right.
Slainte!
