Another OMG repost - Homosexuality & The Bible (round 2)

Okay time to discuss a little more about homosexuality in the bible :)

Today I want to address a little passage from Leviticus, it goes a little something like this:

“A man shall not lie with another man as he lies with a woman”.

This little line has been the bread and butter of Christian conservatives who are hell bent (pardon the pun) on spreading the “word” about how homosexuality is a sin. There is but one flaw in their argument you see, that is that there are actually other laws in Leviticus too, but for the most part Christians seem to ignore them (now it may have a little something to do with the fact that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that most Christian churches are of the belief that you don’t have to follow the laws of Leviticus because Jesus overrode them but that’s neither here nor there).

Some of the other laws in Leviticus state that you can’t wear clothes that are woven of two different fabrics. That means if you wear cotton linen blends that you’re sinning and going to the big fiery place down below. Another is that you can’t grow and eat produce grown in the same field. So no vegetable gardens people. You can’t have an apple tree in the same yard as those chives - you’re sinning.

Other things banned in Leviticus:

Shellfish and bottom feeders (lobster, shrimp, crabs, catfish, etc).

Touching or Eating pork products (pig skin footballs, bacon, ham, pork ribs, etc).

Men being in the same room as a woman who is menstruating.

So you see there are quite a lot of other things in Leviticus that it appears many Christians choose to ignore except for the one that may have to do with homosexuality. I say ‘may’ because the passage can be taken in different ways.

For instance does it mean that a man shouldn’t sleep with another man at the same time as he is sleeping with a woman (i.e. threesome)? Or does it mean that you can’t cheat on a woman with a man? Does it mean that you can sleep with a man as long as you don’t do the same things with him as you would do with a woman? Or just not sleep with men at all? The passage is very open to interpretation. Although I guess it shouldn’t really matter since Christians don’t really follow the rules in Leviticus anyway.

So why then do Christians choose to take this passage and use it all the time? Is it because someone else is telling them what to do? Have they not actually read the very book that they are taking so seriously? Do they not understand that they are doing equally heinous acts under levitical law? My guess is that they don’t actually understand the very religion that they actually claim to practice, which is disappointing to say the least.

Well that’s the big passage for you. I’ll discuss some lesser known ones later and also another story in the bible which is probably better known - well part of the story is.
