I stumbled across this article on the Advocate and thought it was a great campaign.
I often find that many Christians have never taken the time to actually study the bible. First no I don’t think that Jesus would have discriminated against homosexuals, I think Jesus would have embraced two people who love each other. Wasn’t Jesus all about promoting loving one another? I’m not sure about some of the other things the article talks about though, like the stretch of the Roman soldier’s servant getting healed as an affirmation that Jesus is okay with same-sex couples. That being said there are things in the bible are ignored and things that are taken out of context when it comes to homosexuality. This will be too long for just one blog so it will be come part of a series - enjoy.
The story of Jonathan and David found in the 1st book of Samuel speaks of the relationship between the two. Though some argue that it was only a friendship I find that the bible speaks for itself:
“1 Sam 18:1 After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. 2 From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father’s house. 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.”
So in this passage Jonathan and David become “one in spirit” (hmmm), then Jonathan makes a covenant with David because he loves him like himself (okay), and then Jonathan proceeds to undress in front of David, giving his clothes, even his “sword”, bow and belt.
Still not convinced? Neither am I, let’s look at another passage.
“1 Sam 20:17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself. They kissed and wept together.”
Well kissing and weeping together you know they’re just good friends… I guess for a lot of evangelical Christians it’s okay for two guys to kiss and weep together.
“1 Sam 20:41: And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.”
Oh wow they’re um… kissing again… and bowing. Kissing and bowing until David “exceeded” well… hmm… Must be nice to have that sort of friendship.
Last from their story is this.
“2 Sam 1:23 “Saul and Jonathan in life they were loved and gracious, and in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. 24 “O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and finery, who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold. 25 “How the mighty have fallen in battle! Jonathan lies slain on your heights. 26 I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women. 27 “How the mighty have fallen! The weapons of war have perished!”
Your love for me was more wonderful than that of women. Oh… My… Gay… Yeah how this can be interpreted in another way I would love to know. I think I have to refer to an early post of mine about Stewie Griffin being gay. I think these “Christians” are just refusing to see what is so blatently in front of them. They try to spout off on other parts of the bible they claim says homosexuality is sin… Well perhaps the bible says that and perhaps it doesn’t, more on that in the next post.
Slainte!
