Hell Has Frozen Over The Conservatives/Harper Are Actually Supporting Same-sex Marriage

I honestly thought I would be well into middle age before the Conservative Party of Canada would evolve on this matter, but I am happy to admitt I am wrong (or hopefully wrong, what Harper says and what the party does are two different matters, or err they’re supposed to be).

”I want to make it clear that in our government’s view, these marriages are valid.” Justice Minister Rob Nicholson stated, “We will change the Civil Marriage Act so that any marriages performed in Canada that aren’t recognized in the couple’s home jurisdiction will be recognized in Canada.”

The source of this development was a couple from Florida and the UK who were married in Toronto in 2005 and were seeking a divorce. Only thing is they discovered they could not get divorced because according to a little loop-hole int he Civil Marriage Act if a persons home country or state doesn’t recognize the marriage then according to current Canadian law, neither does Canada. This tidbit of information, which has apparently been overlooked for the past 7 year (oops), left over 10,000 people in limbo wondering if their marriage was even considered valid in Canada.

The government was quick to act however, as this came to light only yesterday. Their endorsement of these marriages has left me quite honestly shocked, and pleasantly so.
